Oil Standard (2005) is a sustainability-focused software art project that converts all prices on any webpage into their equivalent value in barrels of oil. When users load a website, Oil Standard's browser plug-in seamlessly inserts the converted prices into the page. As the cost of oil fluctuates on the commodities exchange, prices rise and fall in real-time.
One of the earliest artworks to confront the environmental crisis, Oil Standard has been written about in the New York Times and Art and Electronic Media (Phaidon, 2009). This work was supported by residencies at Eyebeam and the Banff Centre, commissions from Rhizome at the New Museum (2006), and Turbulence.org (2005), as well as grants and awards from CUNY.
