Mashups, Memes, and HOWTOs: New Forms of Online Video

I am chairing a panel this Wednesday at the CUNY Graduate Center

CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street
March 17th 2010, Wednesday, 7:30pm, The Skylight Room (9100)

Online video has rapidly developed genres, conventions, and topics based around a quest for video views and internet fame. These attempts often revolve around themes and tactics as diverse as political humor, cute animals, the lulz, appropriation, instructional videos, and the ambiguous amalgam of the confessional documentary that turns out to, in fact, be short form fiction. This panel will bring together three scholar-practitioners to present and discuss specific examples of this work: Patrick Davison, Eyebeam, a not-for-profit art and technology center; Michael Mandiberg, Assistant Professor of Media Culture, College of Staten Island; and Marisa Olson, Assistant Professor of New Media, SUNY-Purchase.

Co-sponsored by the Digital Media Studies Group and the ITP doctoral certificate program

Autosouveillance, an Automator Script

A year ago(!) I “directed” a month long performance by Marisa Olson called “Marisa Writes her Dissertation: an endurance performance in 31 Acts.” For all of September 2008, Marisa wrote while webcam shots and screencaps of her desktop were automatically uploaded to the net every 60 seconds. This gesture of transparency was a continuation of Olson’s research into the role of sousveillance: she was partly working on dynamics of surveillance, sousveillance, and protest art in network culture. So it fit perfectly.

My brother, Stephen Mandiberg, asked me to retool the scripts for his first year PhD examinations. While Stephen is not directly researching surveillance, he responds well to external pressures. And is also somewhat of an exhibitionist at heart. So I helped him broadcast his EPIC WIN over his exams.

I stripped the code of any sensitive FTP info, and I am releasing the code as a zip file: Autosouveillance.zip Please note there are no instructions, no warranties, and no plans on updating this code. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the exact right way to make all these steps happen. There was no good example available, so hopefully this will help someone. I release it GPL (though there is no way to indicate that in the code itself.) Go to town!

Best Invite Evar!

From Marisa to Steve:

Steve! Hi! It sounds like you’ve been galavanting around giving lots
of rock star lectures and wining lots of awards. I hope there’s been
at least one Giant Check in there!

So I am teaching a Visual Studies seminar (intro, undergrad) at
Purchase  and it’s going to be largely focused on
advertising. They’ll be reading Roland Barthes, Marshall McLuhan,
Gloria Steinem, AIDS Demographics uh, Stephen Duncombe… a range, but mostly cultural theory stuff. I was wondering if you could come in and talk about your work, AAA, or anything ad-related that you think
Purchase undergrads should hear about….

I could definitely try and make you a Giant Czheck, though it would
probably be neon and wouldn’t be redeemable anywhere but Marisa &
Michael’s House of Gluten-Free Pancakes…. (MMHGFP! …pronounced
“meh!”) We don’t have a budget, but I think it would add amazing and
categorically unquantifiable amounts of credibility and cachet to your
C.V. while also not unsettling your political values in relationship
to the state economy, anarchy, and authority by not forcing you to
cash an actual check from a NY government entity.

So basically, it’s Win-Win-Win…. :)

What do you think?
