Autosouveillance, an Automator Script

A year ago(!) I “directed” a month long performance by Marisa Olson called “Marisa Writes her Dissertation: an endurance performance in 31 Acts.” For all of September 2008, Marisa wrote while webcam shots and screencaps of her desktop were automatically uploaded to the net every 60 seconds. This gesture of transparency was a continuation of Olson’s research into the role of sousveillance: she was partly working on dynamics of surveillance, sousveillance, and protest art in network culture. So it fit perfectly.

My brother, Stephen Mandiberg, asked me to retool the scripts for his first year PhD examinations. While Stephen is not directly researching surveillance, he responds well to external pressures. And is also somewhat of an exhibitionist at heart. So I helped him broadcast his EPIC WIN over his exams.

I stripped the code of any sensitive FTP info, and I am releasing the code as a zip file: Autosouveillance.zip Please note there are no instructions, no warranties, and no plans on updating this code. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the exact right way to make all these steps happen. There was no good example available, so hopefully this will help someone. I release it GPL (though there is no way to indicate that in the code itself.) Go to town!

Ping Report, February 19, 2009

I have a bad habit of not blogging little things. Like when I get blogged. It seems so recursive. But at the same time, I delish them, and then they just stay there.

So in an effort to change that practice, I am instituting a Ping Report, which I will do as needed, but at least once a month. Just links, and maybe some pull quotes from blogs and exhibitions.

To start out, here is a bunch of blog coverage of the Bright Bike, Digital Foundations, and my new laser cut work:

Bright Bike:

Again on MAKE blog
And Reblogged on Rolling Resistance.
And Treehugger
And Daily DIY
And Bike Commuters
And Scooter Scoop
And PSFK
And Style Crave
Trends Update
Bike Hacks
NotCot

Digital Foundations

Was featured on BoingBoing, Creative Commons Blog (twice), and on Just Write Click

Burned Books

James Wagner first post, and second post about his visit to see my new work

The DATA BASE piece was featured on the CRAFT zine

misc…

Here is some coverage of the Bright Idea Shade on Guanabee and Inhabitat

I don’t know if I posted the coverage of 31 Acts on N_P

And AfterSherrieLevine.com still riles people up. And was front and center at a conference at Berkeley

Some old news: Oil Standard was in OURS at Parsons

And some really old news: My work was included in http://greenmuseum.org/c/conmob/conmob.html, a show curated for greenmuseum.org by Claude Willey and Ryan Griffis:

curated by Ryan Griffis and Claude Willey with a carload of cultural projects focusing on the problems of mobility and energy. Features works by: Brian Collier, Free Soil, Amy Balkin/Kim Stringfellow/Tim Halbur/Greenaction/Pond, kanarinka, Michael Mandiberg, Laurie Palmer, Platform, Josephine Starrs/Leon Cmielewski.

Marisa Olson writes her Dissertation: An Endurance Performance in 31 Acts

31 Acts Screenshot

A quick post about a new project i'm doing with Marisa Olson.  Its called "Marisa Olson writes her Dissertation: An Endurance Performance in 31 Acts"  (http://www.marisaolson.com/31acts/)  Directed by me, Michael Mandiberg, performed by Marisa Olson.

Marisa is really really good at doing these intense endurance performances (she created, produced and taped a DIY TV show in Berlin for 15 days straight) but has been avoiding her diss. Making art is so much more fun.

So i thought: what if we reframed the diss as an endurance performance, complete with surveillance and an audience.  I wrote some scripts that take screenshots and photos off of the built in webcam and upload them to the server every minute.

So you are the audience now.  It is kind of addictive watching.  Watching the changing look of concentration.  It also dovetails well with the topic of the dissertation, which partly deals with sousveillance and art!

Here is the more formal "Project Description":

Veterans of web-based autobiographical performance, Olson and "Coach Mandiberg" have teamed-up to get Marisa through her dissertation by framing it as an act of endurance. Every day for the month of September, Olson will spend all day writing while webcam shots and screencaps of her desktop are automatically uploaded to the net every 60 seconds. This gesture of transparency is a continuation of Olson's research into the role of sousveillance in "The Art of Protest." www.marisaolson.com/31acts/
